After five long years and several rounds of failed negotiations, Gilad Shalit was set free Tuesday.
He was taken to hospital where he is said to be in ‘stable’ medical condition. Israeli authorities did not comment on the specifics of his medical condition, but in his first television appearance he appeared gaunt and thin.
His release is not without controversy. As part of the deal with palestinian militants, more than 1000 Palestinian prisoners will be released.
Gilad is expected to arrive in his home town of Mitzpe Hila in the coming days. On behalf of the Carleton Conservatives we wish him well in his recovery and reintegration into society.
