Wednesday February 8, 2012 at 7pm at Beth Shalom Synagogue in downtown Ottawa (151 Chapel St). The aim of this evening is to enable students and young business professionals in the capital region to gather with notable Members of Parliament and community leaders in a show of support for the proud Canada-Israel relationship. Minister Jason Kenney, Irwin Cotler and Pat Martin will be speaking.

The Carleton Conservatives have a long history of supporting the state of Israel and we’re excited to attend this Wednesday’s function.

Admission is only 5 dollars; that gets you 2 drink tickets and as much cheese as you can safely consume in one evening. This is an all ages event, but you obviously need to be 19 to drink.

Look forward to seeing everyone there!

A link to the event page can be found here.

For those who might not know, the convention for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario (PCPO) & the Ontario Progressive Conservative Campus Association (OPCCA) will be held on February 10th 2012.

As part of our responsibilities as a campus club, the Carleton Conservatives elect and send delegates to both PC & OPCCA meetings. The club does this so that we may participate in party procedure and the direction of policy.

For the Feb 10th convention, the Carleton Conservatives will elect 5 delegates and 5 alternates for the PCPO Convention, and a further 10 delegates and 10 alternates for the OPCCA AGM.

Our DSM will be held in the Senate room, 608 Robertson Hall on Jan 14th 2012 @ 5:00 pm .

The Delegate Selection Meeting is free to attend but there IS a cost to attend the PC convention in February:

Student Delegate/Alternate – $99.00

Student Member Non-Delegate – $99.00

CUSA Referendum Question:

It is probably safe to assume that by now, the vast majority of you have heard about the CUSA referendum question. For those who haven’t, the gist of the issue is this: the CUSA executive has put forward a resolution, the language of which will target, and in some cases ban, Conservative groups (like us!), gun-safety, pro-life, and pro-Israel groups on campus.

This resolution is an infringement of our ability to express our political and social views, the most basic rights we enjoy as students. This abuse of power by CUSA is appalling and cannot be allowed to pass.

The time for action is nigh.

This Saturday Jan 14th we will be discussing our plans to prevent this act of tyranny from going forward. For more information about the CUSA referendum, consult our page here or you can find the full text of the referendum here.

———————————————————————————————————————

Chris Crawford and Larry Malloy will be at this Saturday’s Delegate Selection Meeting (DSM)

The Carleton Conservatives are proud to announce that both candidates for the position of Eastern Regional Vice-President for the PC party will be speaking at our DSM. Both Candidates will have 3-5 min to talk about their campaign and will then take questions from students. This is a great opportunity to learn about the issues facing Eastern Ontario and we look forward to having them speak!

Conservative Party of Canada National Outreach Coordinator Laura Kurkimaki will be speaking at this Saturday’s DSM regarding the 2012 Conservative Party Internship Program.

Yes, it’s that time of year again: Internship Application Time!

For those who might not know, every year the Conservative Party of Canada holds an internship program for students and young people who are interested in gaining experience in the world of politics.

Successful applicants are placed in government ministries (Defense, PMO, Transport, etc.) as political interns for the summer. As interns, students can expect a once in a lifetime experience working side-by-side with government staffers.

Many interns have gone on to have successful careers in all levels of government. As a former intern myself I can tell you that the experience is second to none.

Below are links to the application forms and FAQ pages.

Hashem Hamdy will be addressing the Carleton Conservatives regarding Israeli Apartheid week.

The Carleton Conservatives have a long history as staunch supporters of the state of Israel.

As part of our effort on campus we hold joint events with the Israeli Awareness Committee (IAC) during Israeli apartheid week; this year will be no different. We look forward to Hashem giving us a peak into what events will be taking place this year.

Hope to see you all there!

OPCCA presidential candidate and Richard Ciano supporter, Ian Merkley will be speaking to students this Saturday

As part of our commitment to ensuring students make an informed decision when voting as delegates, we have invited Ian Merkley to speak at our DSM this Saturday!

We look forward to hearing about his plans for OPCCA and why students should support Richard Ciano for President of the PC party.

———————————————————————————————————————

Are you in favour of a mandatory universal transit pass for full-time undergraduate students at a cost of $180 per semester for each the Fall and Winter term, with annual increases of a maximum 012.5%, beginning in September 2012?

Are you in favour of the Bylaw and Policy amendments as recommended by the Governance Reform Committee?

Do you approve a $2 increase in the student levy for WUSC Carleton, a committee responsible for sponsoring refugee students facing war, persecution, and/or environmental devastation through the Student Refugee Program since 1978?

Are you in favour of banning groups such as Lifeline, the Genocide Awareness Project, Campaign for Life Coalition and other organizations whose primary purpose is to use inaccurate information and violent images to discourage women from exploring all options in the event of pregnancy from Carleton University campus?

Are you in favour of rescinding the levy of the Carleton Academic Student Government (CASG), a group whose sole purpose is to elect students to departmental boards, but spends half of their annual budget on honorarium?

Do you support Carleton University adopting a binding socially responsible investment policy that would require it to divest from companies complicit in illegal military occupations and other violations of international law, including, but not limited to: BAE Systems, Northrop Grumman, Motorola and Tesco Supermarkets?

Are you in favour of amending CUSA’s anti-discrimination on campus policy to include banning all groups that promote guns and gun violence?

(link to actual copy of referendum)

These referendum questions not only violate student rights, but specifically target conservative, gun-safety, pro-life, and pro-Israel groups and student groups on campus! Apparently, free speech only applies on Carleton’s campus when CUSA agrees with you.

Free speech is not debatable. The right of students to advocate for issues close to them is not debatable. CUSA’s executives have constantly undermined student groups and CUSA council all year, and have added another burden to students by proposing these questions.

Carleton needs change. If you agree with us than get involved with pro-accountability, pro-student candidates during the CUSA elections and bring these questions (and the CUSA executives’ many other misdemeanours) to the attention of your friends and classmates.

The time for action is now. We’ll be discussing our plan of action this Saturday Jan 14th at the Carleton Conservatives Delegate Selection Meeting (view Link), BE THERE AND BRING YOUR FRIENDS!

The Carleton Conservatives will be working hard during the next CUSA election to ensure accountability, transparency, respect for students, and candidates who will be as good as their word.

As a student organization, we understand that strong leadership is critically important to the PC movement.

Tim has not only demonstrated consistent moral integrity as leader, but a commitment to young people that has been tremendously valuable to organizations like ours.

Many members of our club were fortunate to work with Tim during the 2011 campaign where he demonstrated a well articulated understanding of the challenges that young people face today.

The Carleton Conservatives would like to express our support for Tim Hudak at the February leadership review. We hope that he remains leader of the PCPO and we hope to work with him in the future.
